For my characters, something happened in the past that influences their decision to fall in love and usually has a strong tie to a father either living or dead. I like to have some dramas or events that my characters struggle with, but work their way through and frees them up to let down their guard. Last, I want them to feel confident enough to allow themselves the privilege to falling in love.
Likewise, the lead female is self-confident, mature and at first is not looking for romance, but falls in love anyway. She may have made some mistakes in the past and is cautious on getting too involved, but feels it is the right thing to do. I bring out her family background and professional responsibilities. As the relationship grows, her attitude on love changes and she starts to feel love is possible again. This relationship is the best thing that ever happened to her.
When you tie all the plots and romance together along with a good story line, you have a great book with passion, mystery and a positive outcomes. Most of the anticipated problems the characters expected were answered by reason or circumstance and they can go forward in their lives.
I like to leave my readers with the feeling they also can have a new start and find their one true love. Sometimes for the first time, or even after the second or third. Hopes and dreams are in the mind, and if I can help one person better understand why they are falling in love and help them along, I have achieved my goal.
